If anything, this book is thought provoking. The story, peppered with post-Soviet slang is an intimate glimpse at contemporary young people of the country I have long left. Seemingly nonchalant in places, it does touch upon such serious questions as life and death, the value of life, and reason for living, as related to so-called “kidults” – young people “refusing” to grow up, but in this novel, they mean it literally. Yes, we all know people who have remained childishly innocent, youthful at heart throughout their lives, but be ready for a sort of an eye opener to read about those who refuse to become adults and opt to end their lives instead, while young. In our day and age, we are prone to “understand” suicide due to depression, but the notion of suicide due to reluctance of growing up, growing older, might shock you. The main character, having come across this phenomenon by accident, tries to uncover the reason for such behavior and in the end, quite by chance, succeeds, while trying to untangle his own problems. The optimist in me liked the ambiguous ending, and you will see why when you read the book.

Here is my favorite quote from the book (as I translate it from Russian): “..every person lives in that reality which he creates for himself, therefore we shouldn’t say that reality is one and the same for everybody and that we all have to adapt to it”. How is that for “food for thought”?…. more >

Нужно ли нам понимать? Понимание всегда опаздывает со временем… Или мы это лишь понимание окружающей нас действительности сквозь призму нашего опыта?
Понимание, не всегда приятная штука.

Нужно ли нам понимать таких как Макс, как foreveryoung?
Каждая глава начинается с предсмертного письма, которое не наполнено ни болью, ни страхом предстоящего…Просто письмо, где человек прощается. Прощание с жизнью, с красками, с эмоциями. Кратко и сухо. Мне казалось, что это агония, никчемная и бесчувственная. Странное ощущение, что они не понимают от чего отказываются. Разве можно знать, что нас ждет? Наврядли…У них есть уверенность того, что больше не повторится. Просто это повторение глубже. Наша первая любовь - всплеск эмоций, она не осознанна. Знаете , кому-то нравится постоянно влюбляться. А им совершенно не хочется это повторять, потому что будет по-другому. Вечно молодые, один накал страстей, одна планка, которую они не захотели менять. А может совершенно по-другой причине: впереди неизвестность, отрицание их, взлеты и падения. Issues 1 and 2 of Ural magazine published Andrei Kuzechkin's latest novel "Young 4 Ever" where we witness addiction of young people to life in virtual world. Our protagonist is a professional, multiple world champion in computer games, a legend in certain circles of gamers. He travels to a quiet small town and begins to enjoy life of "real" people. A safe town where he is not known. Nothing could possibly go wrong there as local community keeps everything in good order. But one fine day, he witnesses a suicide during a birthday party. He later discovers that this suicide was not the first in town. For some unexplained reason, young people were driven to commit suicide by the age of just twenty one years. This was the end of life for them.

I rarely indulge in promoting so-called "young authors" mainly because there are very few truly talented writers among them. But every once in a while I bump into something that sounds like music to the ears. It is my pleasure to introduce Andrei Kuzechkin and his latest novel "Young 4 Ever". I got so excited, that was reading for two days non-stop. Contemporary writing at its best. Written in fairly simple modern lingo, but not primitive. Enticing fresh plot - I got hooked from the very first page. And of course always good to be able to see what boys really think.

About The Author 

Andrei Kuzechkin is a novelist and musician from the heartland of Russia – Nizny Novgorod where he was born and where he lives now. Kuzechkin's writing career took off with publication of his novels in Russian literary magazines. His short story about a provincial Russian rock band largely based on Adnrei's own first hand experience, 'Mendeleev Rock' was published in English translation and served as his ticket to English speaking audiences around the world. Kuzechkin's writing is passionate, sensere and uncompromising. His characteristic mix of intimacy and humour makes his fiction writing particularly engaging. His non-fiction work includes award winning novel about life in modern day Russian countryside, a rural village where he worked as geography teacher. His wit and sharp eye impressed prestigious Debut Prize critics and Olga Slavnikova in particular who associated new writing from Kuzhechkin with literary style of Vasiliy Aksyonov.

Однажды я решил написать свой последний роман. Точнее, написать роман так, будто он — последний. У каждого из нас бывают депрессивные периоды в жизни, когда хочется всё бросить. Иные люди, чтобы пережить такое состояние, замыкаются в себе, не выходят из дома — я же бродил тёплыми августовскими вечерами по улицам, жадно ловил и записывал впечатления. Уличные танцоры, интеллектуальный сноб, который отчаянно рисовался перед девушкой, рок-концерт, куда пришло всего пятнадцать зрителей, похороны старого друга — всё это сложилось в единую мозаику, всё встало на свои места в будущей книге. Чтобы вжиться в шкуру собственного героя, съездил в два города, где прежде не бывал, немного пожил там. В одном из городов, когда был в гостях у друга, нашёл у него журнал со статьёй о профессиональном геймере​ — это недвусмысленно указало, что я на верном пути.

Главный герой романа «Не стану взрослой», Макс - киберспортсмен, неоднократный победитель международных чемпионатов по компьютерным играм. С тем же успехом Макс  мог бы быть писателем или музыкантом, меня интересовал не столько род занятий героя, сколько сама его личность: сильный человек, настоящий профессионал и художник своего дела, который многое пережил и многого добился, но внезапно обнаружил, что не может больше заниматься своим любимым делом, а на что переключиться — не знает. Что же делать? Уйти навсегда или дать себе ещё один шанс? Герой вступает в жестокую борьбу со своим злейшим врагом — с собственным «я». Несмотря на весь свой жизненный опыт и циничный взгляд на жизнь, Макс инфантилен. Добровольно оставить этот мир — значит, сдаться на милость своего детского «я». Продолжить жить — значит, пусть и запоздало, но стать взрослым.

Макс отправляется в небольшое путешествие в незнакомый город и на своём пути обнаруживает множество людей с той же проблемой. Самоуверенная студентка Карина, пикапер-неудачник Константин,  художница Лилия, социопат Вадим — все они застряли в детстве, но каждый — по-своему. И мало того, Макс сталкивается с несколькими случаями самоубийств из-за нежелания взрослеть. Возможно, за этим стоит некая секта — герой начинает расследование. Но не стоит называть «Не стану взрослой» детективом: разгадка тайны — далеко не главное. Больше всего мне хотелось дать общий портрет современного молодого поколения, показать явления, общие для всех развитых стран: не зря английское слово «кидалт» и японское «хиккикомори» вошли во все языки мира.
Учит ли чему-нибудь книга? Концовка даст прямой ответ на этот вопрос.
